Singing in Kessenuma

Temporary housing in Kessenuma

The Christmas Crooners

The Christmas Crooners is a singing group that is based in Sendai city, Miyagi prefecture.  The members put on free performances in the hopes of boosting spirits and sometimes collecting donations for charity.  The songs are sung in English and Japanese and the group accepts vocalists from all backgrounds.  Sendai/Miyagi ALTs have played a key role in the Crooners from the beginning.

In December 2010, after several month of practice, the Crooners took to the streets of Sendai to sing X'mas carols.  At the same time the group collected donations for a local children's cancer support group (CCAJ).  The Crooners managed to raise over 100,000 after just four performances.  That same December the Crooners also performed at the Donald McDonald Children's Hospital.  After the success of the December performances the group planned a set of follow-up performances starting on March 11th, 2011.  However, because of the tragic events of the Tohoku Disaster the performances were cancelled.

Following this, the group shifted focus and in May, 2011 gave a performance for the residents of the Tagajo Evacuation Center.  In December of 2011 the group began performing in temporary housing communities and disaster affected locations throughout Miyagi.  The group is also performing on the streets of Sendai to bring cheer and collect donations (this time to support victims of the Tohoku Disaster).

If you are interested in joining The Crooners we would love to have you.  The main membership prerequisite is a desire to help raise spirits and have fun while doing it.
